The Perfect Cat Toy

Cats love playing as much as they love sleeping, and that’s saying a lot! No object is too small, big, or trivial for your cat to consider it a toy. There are many toys you can purchase at the pet store and even more items in your home that can easily become your cat’s favorite toy. So what is a cat looking for? They love shiny, crinkly, and tinkly things, even better if they’re filled with catnip.

A classical cat favorite is the toy mouse. It doesn’t matter if it looks like a real mouse, or it’s glittery and outrageous in color. Cats love to swat, throw, stalk, tease, and attack the toy mouse. They will carry the mouse around your house with pride, then toss it around to hunt it again. Be sure to get an assortment of mice and rotate them out occasionally, so as to prevent your kitty from getting bored. My personal cat loves the mice you see on the left and you can get some for your kitten here. His favorite is the gray one with blue ears and he insists on playing fetch with it on a daily basis.

Another fantastic cat toy is a laser pointer. While it does require your involvement, it will provide the two of you hours of fun. Shine the pointer’s little red dot on a wall, door, or floor and watch your cat go on a hunt of his life! Make sure to never point the laser light into your cat’s eyes to prevent injury, and clear out the space you’re using of breakables to make a clear path for your little hunter.

Other toys which may pique your cat’s interest include bright feathers on a string, cat “fishing lines,” sparkly balls, cardboard or plastic tunnels, and “treat” toys (toys with tasty treats inside a pocket).

However, you don’t need to spend money to keep your cat entertained. Tease you cat with a bright piece of string. A big ball of aluminum foil is fun, but be sure to keep your cat from biting off pieces of foil so supervise his play with the ball. Some other common household items that make great cat toys are pens, chopsticks, toilet paper tubes, and wine bottle corks.

But of course we all know that the best homemade cat toy is the empty box. Cats LOVE boxes! They love to stalk them, jump in them, and hide in them, just waiting for someone to walk by so they can pounce upon them as they leap out of the box. Cats will even try to fit in boxes entirely too small for them, convinced they can squeeze in. Boxes make for hours of playtime fun, and make great sleeping spaces for cats, too.

With all these options, there’s no excuse for your cat to be bored at home. Whether store-bought or homemade, playing with toys is a great way of bonding with your cat. So grab that laser pointer or feather toy and go have some fun with your feline friend!
